The UK breed standard describes a dog that is moderately long in proportion to its height, with a compact, well-muscled body and enough ground clearance to move freely: at least a quarter of the height at the withers. The height at the withers should be about half the length of the body1,2. In other words, the chest reaches down to within a quarter of the dog's height from the ground, so it is very deep for such a short-legged dog.
