The breed standard describes a strongly built, short-coupled dog that is broad and deep through the chest and ribs, with well-sprung "barrel" ribs1. In plain terms, a Lab's ribcage curves out wide from the spine and drops deep towards the elbows, so its chest girth is large for its height.
